barfield barfield barfield

basic biography

Arthur Owen Barfield was born in London in 1898. Not much is known of his early life, like most others in the UK he joined in WWI. By 1928 he was beginning to publish a few books.

Barfield was mostly concerned with poetry and the romantic. Nothing like the way Williams was -- Barfield was interested in the chivalric in the best sense. He was a thinker, but often was so off in the clouds that people didn't pay attention to what he was saying. As a result, his works are little known because people just won't take the time out to understand or read them.

In 1931 he moved back home to London where he became a lawyer. It was not until his retirement that he had the time to write and publish books (unlike Anthony Trollope). He toured in America towards the end of his life and at least died with some aknowledgement and appreciation. He outlived all the other inklings, dying in 1997 at nearly 100 years of age. He remains the 'Old Took' of the Inklings.

A note, often nobody can remember his name and refers to him as 'That guy whose name starts with a B that was an inkling'. Please take the time out to learn his name. It is the least we can do for the chap.

On a more depressing note, Barfield went astray into Biblical Criticism and the lies of Evolution. He went out of this world without retaining his faith in God. Frankly, we don't know where he is right now. He may be calling across the Gap to Lewis like the rich man to Lazarus.
