basic biography
Eric Rucker Eddison was born November 24, 1882 in Yorkshire. Like many other of the Inklings, he
attended Eton at an early age. He did not go to Oxford University, but instead Trinity College,
Cambridge. At 24 he became a Civil Servant, working for the Board of Trade until 1938. Like many
other Civil Servants, he was given Order of Saint Michael and Saint George in 1924 and the Order of Bath in 1929.
Eddison was married and had a daughter. He began publishing fantasy works in the 1920s, which
Tolkien and Lewis enjoyed. Eddison also wrote poetry and translated various works. He died
in 1945 of a heart attack.
He is not usually listed with the rest of the Inklings, but he is mentioned enough by them to
warrent a comment. He did come once to an Inklings meeting at Lewis' rooms at Magdalen
in June of 1944, where he read from one of his unfinished works.
