Dr. Robert Emlyn Havard was born in 1901. He is also known as "U.Q." or the "Useless Quack", and "Humphrey" which Hugo Dyson once called him by mistake and it stuck. He was Catholic and a physician. He occasionally helped Lewis with clinical technical details in his writings but did not particularly write anything himself. He was simply well-liked by the group and an excellent conversationalist.

According to some references by Tolkien, he was in the Navy during WWII which added another nickname "Red Admiral" -- the red referring to his red hair and beard. Not to end it there, he also became known as "Honest Humphrey". He died in 1985, but remained a good friend and the personal physician of C.S. Lewis and Joy Gresham until their deaths. He was present at the mass Tolkien had said for C.S. Lewis.
