hymns
This was discussed in 1944 at Magdalen
"Some illuminating discussion...of the special nature of Hymns
(C.S.L. has been on the Committee revising Ancient and Modern). I did not
leave till 12:30" (Tolkien "Letters" 103).
I'd be interested to know what Tolkien and the others thought about hymns. We know what Lewis
thought of them as evidenced below:
"I naturally loathe nearly all hymns"
("Letters" 224)
"I know that many of the congregation like singing hymns...to the minority, of whom I am one, the
hymns are mostly the dead wood of the service...of course it is an elementary duty of charity
and humility for me to submit"
("God In The Dock" 331)
